Maybe people will agree with this but the Manningcast has been must-watch TV during the first half when Bill Belichick in on. I guess I didn’t realize how funny he is. It’s such dry humor but the dude is absolutely hilarious beyond the fact that he’s clearly smart and knows what he’s talking about. Oh, and he totally hates Jets owner Woody Johnson.
“I’m not a big Jets fan, in case you don’t know that … I thought Coach Saleh really did a good job with this team … That’s kinda what it’s been there with the Jets. They’ve barely won over 30% in the last 10 years. The owner being the owner … ready, fire aim.”
The “ready, aim, fire line” was just so good. Of course, Bill Belichick used to be the Jets head coach. He just resigned before ever actually coaching the team. As Belichick reminded everyone on the broadcast, he’s never lost as a Jets head coach… which is better than pretty much anyone they have hired over the last 25 years.
They also showed the infamous napkin during the broadcast where Belichick wrote: “I resign as HC of the NYJ.”. He didn’t even bother to write a formal resignation letter. That’s how little respect he has for this ownership group.
What I didn’t expect is how much Belichick would defend Saleh on the broadcast. Maybe it’s a coach sticking up for a coach but he mixed in more praise for Saleh than I imagined he would.
“It’s certainly tough. Particularly that situation. You know, it’s one of the best defensive teams in the league. Robert made them that way,” Belichick said, via ESPN. “They were 32nd his first year, and they’ve been consistently in the top five, top three in most categories. So he’s done a great job on that side of the ball. And then they’ve had some issues at quarterback, and now Aaron’s back, but out of football for a year.
“Just seemed like a little early to pull the trigger on that one to me. But not out of character for the owner. Woody’s always been kind of hard to predict what he’s gonna do. Some of it just is hard to make sense out of, but I think Saleh did a good job there. He brought a strong culture to the defense and obviously not quite there yet, but a long way to go in the season, seemed like a premature move.”
