Former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick believes that the Patriots didn’t get enough in return for Josh Uche and that the Chiefs won the trade.
Uche was traded for a 2026 sixth-round pick on Monday. Belichick was on the Pat McAfee show that same day and assumed the Patriots got at least a 2025 sixth-round pick for the linebacker. Bill explained to McAfee and his crew that if Uche leaves KC next off-season, the Chiefs receive a sixth-round comp pick. So when Belicheck learned that the Pats got a pick in 2026 in return for Uche, he was disappointed in his former team’s front office.
Per The Pat McAfee Show, Belichick said, “Okay, so a 2026 6th rounder, they take them this year. If they don’t re-sign him, they’ll probably get a sixth as a comp pick. So it washes out. If they do re-sign them, then that means they like the player, and the player can help them win. And so it’s a great trade. So, I mean, I think it’s a great trade for Kansas City.”
Belichick continued, “It sounds like the Patriots probably could have got more for him last week, but… it sounds like it didn’t work out. And then, Kansas City got (DeAndre) Hopkins, and so they had to change the trade around. I think it was a great move by Kansas City, they didn’t really go up anything for him.”
It may be true that the Chiefs won this trade, but at least the Patriots got something for Uche. The Patriots have a ton of cap space, so if he left in free agency, they most likely wouldn’t have gotten a comp pick for him. This way, they receive a sixth-round pick.
Belichick also believes that Uche will have more opportunities to rush in KC, as they are rarely behind in their games, unlike the Pats. It will be interesting to see if he can return to his 2022 form in a new setting.
