Becky Hammon, please do not leave the San Antonio Spurs. Let me first state: you are fully deserving of a head coaching job, and that has been clearly evident since you won the Las Vegas Summer League in 2015. Not only are you an inspiration to women in the basketball world, but you also have the ability to coach and coach well. Pau Gasol praised your basketball IQ and ability in The Players Tribune:

“I’ve played with some of the best players of this generation … and I’ve played under two of the sharpest minds in the history of sports, in Phil Jackson and Gregg Popovich,” Gasol wrote. “And I’m telling you: Becky Hammon can coach. I’m not saying she can coach pretty well. I’m not saying she can coach enough to get by. I’m not saying she can coach almost at the level of the NBA’s male coaches. I’m saying: Becky Hammon can coach NBA basketball. Period.”

The reports of the Blazers and Magic head coaching interviews sadden me. I know you are one of the best head coach candidates, and it is selfish of me to want you to stay in San Antonio, especially considering how a female head coach could benefit the future of NBA coaching, but I just do not want to see you go. I would love for you to make history as the first female NBA Head Coach, but the selfish part of me wants to see that in San Antonio. In no way do I want to rush the inevitable retirement of coaching legend Gregg Popovich, but I do want you to be the face of the Spurs as you were destined to be.

This is article is a selfish plea but a plea nonetheless. As time goes on, the likelihood of you accepting a head coaching position grows, and that opportunity could come as soon as this 2021 offseason. We Spurs fans will root for you no matter where you go, but it would be bittersweet if you were not in San Antonio for the long haul. You will get your chance, Becky Hammon, and you will change the landscape of the NBA as we know it.
