The Boston Celtics selected Baylor Scheierman with the last pick in the first round of the 2024 NBA Draft. On paper, Scheierman feels like a great fit and showed the ability to make it splash from deep during his collegiate career.
Recently, the Creighton product was asked who he models his game after. His answer… Joe Ingles.
“I like watching Joe Ingles a lot — just how he plays,” Scheierman told reporters. “That’s one guy I watched a lot growing up and tried to model my game after.”
Celtics executive Austin Ainge, who we just talked about in terms of sharing that key free agents took pay cuts, said that he thinks Scheierman resembles a Luke Kennard type of player.
“Some people have asked me about comps. He’s bigger and a little different, but Luke Kennard was also a high school quarterback and plays kind of similarly,” Ainge said on the “Celtics Talk” podcast, as transcribed by Boston.com. “So, that’s something fans at home can think about.”
Scheierman, 24, could become the long term replacement for Sam Hauser if he prices himself out of Boston. Hauser has just one year remaining on his contract before he needs a raise. If that raise becomes too expensive, Scheierman could become the internal replacement to fill that role as a sharpshooter.
Just in case you were curious, yes, Aussie Joe Ingles is still in the league. He just signed a cheap deal with Minnesota a few days ago.
