I think I’m finally ready to say it. The Miami Heat may be heading to the NBA Finals, but Bam Adebayo lowkey stinks. Out of all of the contending teams in the league, I’d contend he’s the worst number two option in the league. With the new CBA rules coming, I’d be very hesitant to make Bam my second guy under the cap.
I’m not here to tell you Bam flat out sucks. I’m more so trying to say that sometimes he just has a stench to him. I don’t think even Heat fans can deny that. When things are going bad for Bam, it’s just awful and I don’t know how we can just ignore his flaws.
If given a choice, I’d much rather have a player that doesn’t shoot enough instead of one that shoots too often. AKA the Russell Westbrook disease. However, even Heat fans should be willing to acknowledge that Bam’s hesitation offensively is a problem. The shot making can also be a problem at times. Too often are we getting performances like the one Bam had in Game Six of the East Finals against Boston.
Where is the aggressiveness from a so called second option? He gets switched onto smaller defenders all the time and rarely makes teams pay for it. The pure range is limited and I never really trust him to make those mid range shots.
With the new CBA rules the way they are, should Miami really be willing to commit to Bam as that secondary star getting a Supermax contract? I’d argue for sure not. Now, maybe you don’t run into that problem but I’d imagine Bam gets on one of these third team All-NBA lists eventually. He just needs a third team spot during the 25-26 season to qualify.
Let’s also consider this fact. Let’s say I swapped Bam for Mark Williams in Charlotte right now. You’re positive the gap is that wide? Bam has the luxury of playing for the best head coach in the NBA and for a franchise that just made the Finals with seven undrafted players in the playoff rotation. What would Bam look like in Charlotte? That’s what I want to know. We already have that experiment with the Martin twins. Cody hasn’t developed at all with the Hornets and Caleb was the rightful MVP of the East Finals and couldn’t miss.
I know people agree with me on this. I’m not saying Bam is a bad player. He’s a bit of a unicorn in the fact that he’s so versatile defensively and can actually play make for a big guy. I just think we gotta calm down about how good Bam is. I get that Miami has no front court depth behind Bam but in a hypothetical world starting a team from scratch, there are A LOT of names I’d take ahead of him and I don’t think he’d be nearly as good anywhere else.
