Orioles fire manager Brandon Hyde
Amid a tumultuous 15-28 start, the Baltimore Orioles have fired manager Brandon Hyde, the team announced Sunday.
Here was an excerpt from a statement released by the team:
“As the head of baseball operations, the poor start to our season is ultimately my responsibility,” Mike Elias, the Orioles’ executive vice president and general manager, said via release. “Part of that responsibility is pursuing difficult changes in order to set a different course for the future.
“I want to thank Brandon for his hard work, dedication, and passion all these years, and for returning the team to the playoffs and winning an AL East Championship. His many positive contributions to this organization and to Baltimore will remain, and we wish he and his family the best.”
Hyde is not far removed from winning the AL Manager of the Year award in 2023 after helping lead the Orioles to their first 100-win season since 1980. Life comes at you fast in this profession.
The Orioles underperformed last season and they have significantly underperformed this year, but a lot of the struggles have come on the mound. Baltimore’s pitching has been an unmitigated disaster to begin 2025.
They are bottom-six in the sport in ERA (5.33), FIP (5.04), strikeout rate (19.7), K-BB% (10.5), home runs allowed per nine (1.6) and barrel rate (10.0).
Not great, Bob.
While it has been better since the start of May, the Orioles’ offense has also been below average. They have gotten unlikely boosts from Ramon Laureano, Ryan O’Hearn and Emmanuel Rivera, who has filled in for Jordan Westburg, who’s nursing a nagging hamstring injury.
