Baker Mayfield is on the move again! The former #1 pick is now returning to the NFC South and signing a one year deal with Tampa Bay. The Bucs for now have found their replacement for Tom Brady. Adam Schefter has the news below:
To say the past 365 days is a rollercoaster for Mayfield would be an understatement. He went from being traded out of Cleveland to the Panthers, absolutely sucking there, getting cut, going to the Rams, and still not being impressive at all. And now, he has a new home in Tampa Bay. On the whole, Mayfield went 2-8 in 2022. He completed 60 percent of his passes. He threw for 2,163 yards and only 10 touchdowns with 8 interceptions. At the very least, he’ll have guys to throw it to here. Barring any trades or cuts, Mike Evans and Chris Godwin is still one of the best receiver duos in the league. They still have a very good offensive line when healthy. Once again, the success is going to come down to him.
If not Mayfield, the Bucs would have had to roll with Kyle Trask as their starter. And in all honesty, it’s very possible that he starts a few games in 2023. We’ve already seen guys like Sam Darnold, P.J. Walker, and Bryce Perkins bench him. In short, to call this a fall from grace for Baker Mayfield would not do it anywhere near enough justice. It’s very possible that this could be his final chance in the NFL if he continues to disappoint.
If his ego wasn’t so inflated, he wouldn’t have had to play through injury in 2020, where he was actually good. Because of that, he probably would have gotten an extension to remain the starter in Cleveland. Furthermore, the Browns wouldn’t have given up the kitchen sink for Deshaun Watson and paid him a disgusting amount of money. And, as a result, Lamar Jackson may have already gotten his extension done in Baltimore by now. Quite the ripple effect, don’t you think?
Another team is now taking a chance on Baker Mayfield. Even if he does well, I’m sure this is a one year stint in Tampa at max. You could only imagine that the Bucs have their fingers crossed to get Caleb Williams as their next franchise QB. However, this roster is not in a complete tank situation. But Baker Mayfield may find a way for that to happen.
