Avalanche Sign Tomas Tatar To One-Year Deal

The Colorado Avalanche are adding so much needed depth prior to the start of the 2023-24 NHL Season. Tomas Tatar was one of the best remaining free agents on the open market and he’s now found a home in Denver. Tatar has agreed to a one year deal with the Avs while carrying an AAV of $1.5 million.

The Athletic’s Peter Baugh was the first to report the news. Link goes to his Tweet, not his post so you can click if you want.

Tatar, 32, is a pretty underrated player. Not a flashy guy but someone that can provide quality minutes on the ice. The former Detroit second round pick in 2009 has been around the block now. This will be Tatar’s fifth team in his now 13 year career.

Tatar can still play. This is not a nothing add for Colorado. Tatar posted 48 points including 20 goals for New Jersey last season. His on ice metrics were really good too. A really solid puck carrier and responsible defender on the wing too. His finishing ability may take a tick up too if he gets minutes with the horses in this lineup.

This is probably your Evan Rodrigues replacement in reality. Jonathan Drouin will get a crack at high level left wing minutes as well. Still, Rodrigues departed this offseason and the Avs really haven’t replaced him. This move accomplishes that goal. It doesn’t cost Colorado much either. Given the fact that Gabriel Landeskog is on LTIR, the Avs have some extra money to play with.
