The Athletics are calling up top prospect Nick Kurtz, the No. 35 prospect in MLB, MLB.com’s Martin Gallegos first reported Monday.
Kurtz has been mashing with Triple-A Las Vegas in the Pacific Coast League, which is very hitter-friendly. The first baseman is slashed .321/.385/.655 with seven home runs and 24 RBIs across 20 games.
Kurtz was the Athletics’ No. 4 overall selection in the 2024 MLB Draft with only 12 combined games (A-AA) of minor league experience heading into the season. He was phenomenal with the A’s in Spring Training, hitting .261 with a .973 OPS in 14 games before getting demoted to minor league camp.
The A’s have run into a good problem to have with Kurtz’s ascension. Their first baseman, Tyler Soderstrom, is tied for the MLB lead in home runs (9) and has been one of the breakout stars through the first month of the 2025 season, sporting a 1.005 OPS. Thus, Brent Rooker, the team’s everyday DH, may be pushed to a more regular role in the OF–likely for Miguel Andujar.
There is a recent track record of prospects having an adjustment period to MLB pitching before they break out. Look at 2023 first-rounder Matt Shaw (Cubs), who blew through the minors before hitting a wall at the start of this season, when he began as their everyday 3B.
I don’t know if the same will happen to Kurtz. Every hitter is different. What are your expectations for the 22-year-old prospect? Let us know in the comments!
