Dusty Baker retired from the sport and it didn’t take the Astros long to find their next manager. Houston has decided that they are going to elevate Joe Espada into that role. Espada was the bench coach in Houston and has been with the organization since 2018. Now it’s his turn to actually manage the team.
Brian McTaggart of MLB.com was the first to report the news. The team will hold a press conference at noon EST on Monday.
Espada, 48 has previous coaching experience as a third base coach with the Marlins and Yankees. However, this will be the first time he’s managing his own team. The Astros should know what they’re getting with Espada. He’s been with the team for a long time and has been waiting in the wings for this moment. Espada was a bench coach for a World Series champion a season ago. Espada took over the role when Alex Cora left for Boston.
This team is obviously still really good and was an eyelash away from reaching the World Series again losing to the eventual champion Rangers in 7 games in the ALCS. Baker went 320-226 during his time with Houston. That’s the bar for Espada to match now that it’s his turn to take over.
Let us know in the comments. Did the Astros make the right hire or should they have looked to hire someone from outside of the organization? Feel free to list your thoughts below.
