Whatever you were doing as a 15-year-old it is not as impressive as Arsenal midfielder Ethan Nwaneri. When Nwaneri was called on in the 90th minute of The Gunners’ match Sunday morning with Brentford he became the youngest player in Premier League history.
Nwaneri was called upon by Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta to replace Fabio Vieira for the final few minutes of The Gunners’ 3-0 win at fellow London foes Brentford. He was one of two players brought on at the end along with 19-year-old Marquinhos.
At 15 years and 181 days old Nwaneri shattered the previous record for the youngest player to appear in a Premier League match that was held by current Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliot when he debuted for Fulham in 2019 at 16 years and 30 days old.
The Englishman also became the youngest Arsenal player since Cesc Fabregas in 2003 four years before Nwaneri was even born. Fabregas was 16 and 177 days old when he first stepped foot on a Premier League field and quickly rose to stardom for the North London side.
Following the match Nwaneri was given a standing ovation as he was shoved in front of the traveling Arsenal fans by goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.
Nwaneri was born in 2007, I remember 2007 as a second-grade kid just excited that the Colorado Rockies were making their lone World Series run. At 15 I could get through high school and go to soccer practice but never would have had the maturity to step on a field in front of over 17,000 fans.
Before moving to the senior team, Nwaneri was playing on Arsenal’s U18 team since he was 14 and even had appearances for the U17 and U18 English National Team. The future is extremely bright for this kid and he could become a star in the future for league-leading Arsenal.
It is insane to think that a 15-year-old kid is playing in the biggest soccer league in the world and now he probably still has to go home and finish his homework before school tomorrow. Wonder what his reception is going to be when he walks into his first-period class on Monday and is asked about his past weekend?
