The Arizona Diamondbacks are calling up top prospect Jordan Lawlar, a top-5 prospect in MLB, according to the Arizona Republic’s Nick Piecoro.
Lawlar is the No. 4 prospect on MLB Pipeline and was FanGraphs’ preseason No. 14 prospect.
This isn’t the first time that the former first-round pick was called up. He saw brief time in 2023 and was expected to be a big part of the Dbacks’ 2024 plans, but dealt with thumb and hamstring injuries that limited him to just 23 games in the minors last season.
Lawlar didn’t make the Dbacks’ roster out of camp after slashing .294/.368/.529 in 13 spring appearances, but it was only a matter of time before the 23-year-old was going to get another opportunity in the big leagues. He’s been mashing with Triple-A Reno, sporting a .992 OPS (143 wRC+) with six home runs and 31 RBIs in 37 games (152 plate appearances).
His primary position is shortstop, but he has played both second and third base a steady amount this season.
There is a logjam in Arizona’s infield with Eugenio Suarez (3B), Geraldo Perdomo (SS) and Ketel Marte (2B), who recently returned from a hamstring injury. According to Piecoro’s report, Arizona’s goal is to play Lawlar four games a week at “various positions.”
“My questions are — I know he’s going to impact the game offensively, but you can’t totally count on that all the time — what’s he going to do defensively?” Torey Lovullo, the Dbacks’ manager, said, according to Piecoro. “Is he able to move around comfortably and play three positions and make his plays? The answer is yes.”
His bat alone is worth the call-up, but I am fascinated to see how he adjusts to MLB pitching while being a utility infielder. In his small 34-plate appearance sample in 2023, he recorded just four hits with 11 strikeouts (to just two walks).
I expect that to be better, but it does take time for most prospects to adjust regardless of whether they have everyday at-bats or not.
