Arizona Cardinals Fire Head Coach Kliff Kingsbury

The Arizona Cardinals have fired head coach Kliff Kingsbury, a year after giving him a contract extension, after a disappointing season. Per Ian Rapoport.

After years of steady improvement, 2022 proved to be a major step backward for the Arizona Cardinals. After giving Kliff Kingsbury a contract extension, the Cardinals decide to go in a different direction for 2023.

The firing of Kingsbury is not surprising by itself, what makes it a bit of a puzzling move is the timing. Around this time last year, Kingsbury got an extension through the 2027 season. I had Kingsbury on my NFL hot seat list so I saw this one coming.

Kingsbury finished his career in Arizona with a 28-37-1 record, he also had a losing record as a college head coach. The situation in Arizona is continuing to look worse. With Kyler Murray set to likely miss a large chunk of the 2023 season, a lack of youthful talent, and a bad salary cap situation make it a very unappealing destination for first-time general managers and now head coaches.

2022 was not an easy year for the Arizona Cardinals, and they did not have the strong start that they have had in past seasons under Kingsbury. The move to extend him last year seemed questionable and is ultimately one Arizona regrets with the sunk money and now looking for someone new to lead this team.

Another interesting part is that in the 100-year history of the Arizona Cardinals, the organization has never had a single head coach last over six years.

It seemed Kingsbury was on pace to be the first, but obviously, he will not. The Cardinals have cleaned house, but I think it will be difficult to find any promising and new candidates to take the jobs.
