Angels Add Tyler Anderson To Their Rotation

In what is the first big free agent signing of the offseason, the Los Angeles Angels sign left-handed starter Tyler Anderson to a 3-year, $39 million deal. This is after Anderson turned down the Dodger’s qualifying offer of a one-year, $19.65 million deal.

Tyler will join a rotation highlighted by Shohei Ohtani and Patrick Sandoval. The Angels look to improve after going a dismal 73-89 and finishing third in the AL West division. In return, the Angels lose their 2nd-round draft pick while the Dodgers receive a pick following the fourth round.

Anderson had a breakout season last year with the Dodgers posting his best numbers as a big leaguer. The lefty went 15-5 with a 2.57 ERA, a 1.002 WHIP, and a 3.31 FIP. Tyler also was selected to the 2022 All-Star game, yet did not play.

The Dodgers will now have to do some work to solidify their starting rotation for 2023. They already re-signed Clayton Kershaw to a one-year $20 million deal on November 11th. They still have young talents such as Julio Urias, Tony Gonsolin, and Dustin May.

With LA losing Anderson, however, many options for starting pitching remain. They also need to find someone, especially with Walker Buehler receiving Tommy John Surgery recently.

Many believe the Dodgers will make a strong push for future Hall of Famer Justin Verlander. The righty went 18-4 with a league-leading 1.75 earned run average with the Astros. He is the front-runner for the AL Cy Young. Although he’s 39, he would fill the hole left by Tyler in a big way.

Another possibility is Carlos Rodon who declined the Giant’s qualifying offer as of today. The lefty had an impressive 2022 season, going 14-8 with a 2.88 ERA and a league-leading 2.25 FIP. He could be that third lefty in the Dodgers rotation.
