Alperen Sengun inks five-year extension with Rockets

The Houston Rockets have signed star center Alperen Sengun to a five-year, $185 million extension, ESPN’s Bobby Marks was among the first to report Monday.

Houston center Alperen Sengun has agreed on a five-year, $185 million rookie extension, his agents Sean Kennedy and Jeff Schwartz of @excelbasketball, tells ESPN. The contract includes a player option in the last year.

Sengun’s rookie-scale extension was among the biggest handed out before the 6 p.m. deadline Monday; his deal comes not long after guard Jalen Green signed a three-year extension. After discussions lingered on whether or not both sides would agree to a deal due to Houston’s cap situation in 2025, a deal was reached minutes before the 6 p.m. deadline struck.

Sengun is coming off a season where he finished third in Most Improved Player voting. Finally being one of the primary hubs offensively, the 6-foot-11 center averaged 21.1 points, 9.3 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 1.2 steals, shooting 53.7 percent from the floor with a 58.5 true-shooting percentage.

For the first time since becoming a full-time starter, he will have a reliable backup in veteran Steven Adams to take pressure off him when he’s not on the floor. Nevertheless, Houston’s offense flows well when Sengun is initiating offense at the elbows and mid-to-high post areas. He’s one of the few players in today’s generation with a deep bag of post tricks with excellent footwork, though he’s also an excellent playmaker.

He’s still only 22-years-old and is growing in every facet, especially defensively. Regardless, Houston has a rock solid young core with Green, Reed Sheppard, Cam Whitmore and Amen Thompson–in addition to Fred VanVleet and Dillon Brooks, who they signed to large deals last summer.
