Alexander Volkanovski Calls Out Dustin Poirier After UFC 302

In Alexander Volkanovski’s newest YouTube video following the loss of Dustin Poirier against Islam Makhachev at UFC 302, Volkanovski calls out Poirier for a lightweight fight in the future. Volkanovski suggests that while he waits for an opportunity for a featherweight title fight he and Dustin could compete in a lightweight division fight.

After over a decade of fighting the UFC, Dustin Poirier has become a legend in the octagon. However, hitting age 35 has begun to take its toll on Dustin. In the post-fight octagon interview with Joe Rogan, Dustin addresses his concerns about continuing his career.

I know I can compete with the best of these guys…If I do fight again what am I fighting for? Just to fight?” Poirier even hints at his retirement after his loss, saying “I think this could be it honestly, Joe.”

Volkanovski seeks to answer Poirier’s questioning of what he has to look forward to in his career as just having a “fun fight” against him.

I know he just wants to have good fun fights… and I think that would be a massive fight...” says Volkanovski. And Volkanovski is right, that fight would be huge for both fighters and potentially a great way for Poirier to send off his career in the UFC.

Previously, we have seen fighters come back for one last event to send their career off before. Whether that’s Chan Sung Jung, the ‘Korean Zombie’ face off against Max Holloway as a fun return fight, or Luke Rockhold coming back to face Paulo Costa, these fights are a great way to end a career with a bang. Considering Poirier and Volkanovski have shared opponents and somewhat similar fighting styles, this fight would be entertaining for fans and fighters alike.

Although sounding extremely exciting, we may sadly never get this fight. The turnaround for Poirier to begin training and preparing for another fight in the timespan that Volkanovski is looking for may never work especially knowing that Poirier is questioning if he even wants to continue his career.
