Alexander Steen is a St. Louis Blues legend through and through. After an impressive career on the ice, he is now planning a transition to the front office. Yesterday the team made an announcement that President Doug Armstrong signed an extension into 2029. However, after the next two seasons the Manitoba native will take over operations as GM while Armstrong transitions to President of Hockey Ops. It’s a really cool moment for all parties involved. Anyone who played in St. Louis over the past few years could probably tell you how good of a hockey IQ Steen has.
Steen originally played three and a half years in Toronto. The Leafs drafted him 24th overall in the 2002 Draft. He then joined the Blues in a trade during the 2008-2009 season. From there, he never looked back, logging 496 points in 765 games for St. Louis. He was part of a core that included the likes of David Backes, Alex Pietrangelo, and Vladimir Tarasenko. After many years of coming up short in the 2010’s, they finally broke through in 2019. That team has the distinction of being the only team that was at one point last place in the NHL standings to go on and win the Stanley Cup. Originally a staple in the Top Six, Steen showed some veteran heart by moving up and down the lineup where needed en route to climbing the mountain.
The Blues roster is kinda in a weird spot at the moment. There are some really good players on there like Robert Thomas and Pavel Buchnevich. But there’s also a decent chunk of veterans that are aging out. Kevin Hayes is not gonna kill your salary cap but he is better served playing on a legit contender after joining from Philly last year. The aforementioned Tarasenko was one of the first names of the old guard moved out. We very well could see someone like Jordan Kyrou on the move as well. It’s a time of transition and no better than a guy who knows the roster and system as well as Steen does to take over.
After over a decade on the ice, Alexander Steen will be taking the reins as Blues General Manager in 2026. It’s a cool move that fans should get behind.
