The news we have all been waiting for is officially official. Alex Pietrangelo is officially LTIR bound and will miss the 2025-26 NHL Season. It remains unclear if that means there’s a chance he could suit up for the postseason, but either way, Petro is out for the foreseeable future.
David Pagnotta of the Fourth Period was the first to report the news. Petro is set to undergo multiple surgeries and a LTIR retirement isn’t out of the realm of possibility.
Pietrangelo, 35, posted 33 points in 71 games with a +11 rating last season. That really doesn’t tell the full story, however. It was pretty obvious that he was dealing with something last year. Petro skipped the 4 Nations tournament and didn’t look right when he played. I’d argue he was the team’s 4th best defenseman last year.
Who knows what type of surgery we’re dealing with here, but if it has a chance to get him right and back to his old self, it makes sense to make this happen rather than continuing to play hurt.
Yes, maybe this is a Mitch Marner article. Pietrangelo heading to LTIR clears up $8.8 million in cap space this summer. Add the $5.6 million the Knights have available, and that creates a decent chunk of cash. Add another $3 million if Nic Roy gets traded. $17.4 million should be just enough to sign Marner, one more D, and sign the remaining RFA’s on the roster. Of course, I tried to warn you about all of this days ago when people were spreading lies.
