Alex Pietrangelo is LTIR-bound and will miss the upcoming 2025-26 NHL Season. We just didn’t know exactly what was going on until today.
It appears the veteran defenseman is dealing with a serious hip injury that will likely result in a likely retirement. We very well may have seen the last of Petro. He’s not totally giving up on playing again, but he acknowledged the chance he will come back is low.
The VGK released a statement regarding the news. Below is a snippet from Pietrangelo. Also included in the statement is a quote from Kelly McCrimmon detailing what the player is going through.
“The past few years have been very challenging on my physical well-being, and I am in a difficult position with my overall playing health,” said Pietrangelo. “After exploring options with doctors as well as my family, it’s been advised to remove the intensity of hockey to see if my body can improve so that I can return to a normal quality of life. This decision has been difficult to come to terms with after the last 17 years of competition and the camaraderie with my teammates and coaches. The likelihood is low that my body will recover to the standard required to play, but I know this is the right decision for me and my family.”
Pietrangelo, 35, is a two-time Stanley Cup champion and one of the most respected players in the league. Despite battling injuries, he still produced like a top-pairing D throughout it all.
Maybe Petro is truly done. However, the door was certainly left open. If he can potentially give it a go for the playoffs, that would be an insane boost for the club.
In terms of the aftermath of it all, Mitch Marner was acquired by having Petro’s money on LTIR. Also, Vegas appears to be trying to replace the right side of the defense with Rasmus Andersson.
