Alex Cora Explains Why The Red Sox Acquired Danny Jansen & Dumped Reese McGuire

Alex Cora signed a contract extension with the Red Sox and many fans started to wonder if Boston was keying up a big move. Why would Cora sign early otherwise, right? The Sox made a move but it did nothing but give everybody blue balls. Craig Breslow appears to be a clone of Chaim Bloom… unfortunately.

The best manager in baseball did his best to try to explain this move.

“It think it’s more about the roster actually than the position,” manager Alex Cora said about Boston’s decision to trade for Jansen and move on from McGuire.

“It creates balance,” Cora said about having Jansen’s right-handed bat. “Reese did a good job, especially defensively the last month and a half. If you look at the numbers as far as like framing, he’s top three in the league. He did an amazing job with our pitching staff. Offensively, it was tough because he wasn’t playing that much. It was hard for him to get into a rhythm. Coming into the season, I expected to play him more. But Connor happened.”

“We’ve got a right-handed bat (in Jansen) that we do believe fits into this stadium,” Cora said. “Pull hitter that hits the ball in the air. And when Connor’s not playing, we are not so left-handed. It gives us options. When one of the two is not playing, we’ve got a right-handed hitter on the bench instead of a lefty. So we can mix and match with the opposition.”

“As far as like the whole roster, we improve,” Cora said. “I don’t see it as improving over Reese. I see it as the roster fit makes a lot of sense.”

“But at the same time don’t be surprised if you see Connor start taking more ground balls at second base and first base,” Cora said. “He is that versatile. He’s such a good athlete. You’ve seen it. Close games he has played second. Will figure it out. We’ve still got a few days for this (the trade deadline) to be over and we can have our team. Whatever it is, it’s going to be our team and we’re going to be ready for it. But I think there’s ways to have them both in the lineup and it doesn’t have to be DH/catcher.”

Cora admitted so many things here and it’s just so disheartening. Everything they do right now is just a waste of time to stay slightly above average and it’s infuriating. Cora admitted Jansen isn’t even an upgrade over McGuire. This was just about getting another righty bat.

Can you imagine if Danny Jansen is the right-handed bat this front office tries to sell us on with Kyle Teel coming? Jansen is also a UFA at the end of the year.

JOKE!

If the Sox were going to make a trade with Toronto it should have been for Vlad.

How many hours did Breslow waste on this trade? How many more is he going to waste trying to figure out what to do now that McGuire got DFA’d?

It’s shocking he hasn’t called me yet. How else do you describe it? It’s super cool to see the Red Sox a former second round pick for a rental catcher to platoon with Connor Wong. Super awesome this team is…
