Kalen DeBoer and the Alabama Crimson Tide are going through it right now. Since the transfer portal officially opened on 12/9, there have been 15 players who have entered. On3.com is reporting the latest player to hit the portal is defensive lineman Damon Payne. The redshirt Junior played in all 12 games for the Crimson Tide this season, including his first career start against South Carolina. Payne has totaled 14 tackles, with one-half tackle for loss.
Damon Payne did not play his freshman season, taking a redshirt season. In the 2022 season, Payne would appear sparingly, getting snaps in just five games all season. Seeing the field has been a struggle for Payne, totaling 20 or more snaps in a game just once in 2023, and this season he hit that number eight times. He was a four-star recruit coming out of high school and was the No. 49 overall prospect in his class, No. 7 overall at his position. He will be looking for a fresh start in 2025, someplace where he can hopefully see the field a bit more.
Damon Payne hitting the transfer portal is a detriment to the Alabama program, as they are losing depth at multiple positions. Payne will be in that upper tier of defensive linemen in the portal, and should have a few suitors calling. EDGE is dominating in terms of big-name talent, but defensive line does have some quality players in there to be had. I don’t expect Payne to stay in the SEC, but some middle-tier schools in the ACC or Big 12 would be wise to come calling. One good season from Payne could pump life into his NFL Draft stock for 2026.
