Does college sports have a storming the field/court problem? People have gotten hurt in the past and programs themselves keep being fined when it happens. So what do we do about all of this? Well, Alabama AD Greg Byrne has a suggestion but it’s completely insane.
“I think from a safety standpoint, keeping people off the fields and courts is a good thing for everybody involved,” Byrne told ESPN. “If we said that the home team, if they storm the field or the court, they’re going to lose the game right then and there, that will stop it.”
“I don’t think from a financial penalty standpoint you can really put anything into place that would curtail it,” Byrne said. “I think it has to be other steps, other actions.”
“I truly believe it — if we said that the home team, if they storm the field or the court, they’re going to lose that game right then and there, that will stop it,” Byrne said.
So let me get this right. You’re going to make teams forfeit games if fans storm the field? Does Byrne get the fact that players on the field who actually determine the score have zero ability to prevent that from happening? I can’t wait til mainstream sports media blames a quarterback for a team forfeiting a game because fans ran onto the field.
Why do we have to ban storming the court? Why can’t we just make things simple?
This is all that really needs to be done.
If you injure a player storming the court, you suffer the legal consequences for it. If you get hurt while on the field, it’s the wild, wild west out there. That’s on you. As long as everybody knows that going in… what’s the problem?
