AEW Rampage was the last show before the collaborative Forbidden Door pay-per-view. Rampage is only an hour long, but always feels longer. They jam so much action into one hour, it always blows me away. There isn’t much linked to the Forbidden Door pay-per-view, but the matches were still great.
*Spoiler Warning*
Andrade and Rey kicked off the show. These two men are no strangers to each other. Rey was looking for revenge against Andrade after he eliminated him from the battle royal. The pair have great chemistry together and it showed in this match. It was both high-flying and hard-hitting; both men shined in every aspect. This match was amazing from start to finish. Rey Fenix never has a bad match and Andrade is extremely underutilized in AEW. This rivalry seems to be just heating up and I’m totally behind it. I could watch these two wrestle all day. Rush El Toro Blanco helped Andrade pick up the victory by kicking Rey below the belt when the ref wasn’t looking. Post-match, Rush took the mask of Rey, which is highly disrespectful in Lucha Libre culture.
Winner: Andrade El Idolo
Eddie Kingston cut a promo pretty much saying that he was just focused on Blood and Guts next Wednesday. He wants to hurt Chris Jericho and make him bleed. That’s the only way he will get revenge for Chris burning his face.
Strickland and Lee cut a promo saying that they are working together. He eliminated Lee from the battle royal even though he was his tag-team partner. Strickland seemed to be a little more positive than Lee was about their team. Lee seemed hesitant but did have a little faith in them getting back to their winning ways.
Deeb and Martinez have been on a three-win streak as a team. They made quick work of Luck and Seirra picking up the victory fast. There is some friction between Deeb and Martinez. Martinez went to hit the ropes, but accidently hit Deeb in the process. After the match, Deeb shoved Martinez adding more tension to their team. This is going to eventually lead to Martinez vs Deeb for the ROH Women’s World Championship.
Winner: Mercedes Martinez (c) & Serena Deeb
Jonathon Gresham & Lee Moriarty were conducting an interview when they got interrupted by Tully Blanchard. Tully claimed his team had a better record and they should be up next. Gresham then challenged Blanchard’s guys to a match. This interview was interesting because they conducted it like it was on Ring of Honor.
Both of these men are highly rated prospects. The DKC trains in the NJPW LA Dojo. This is the first time these two have ever met in the ring. Both are young and have a bright future ahead of them which made this match really fun. HOOK has yet to lose in AEW with a record of 9-0. HOOK actually took some damage in this match, which is a first. He usually completely dominates his opponents, but The DKC got in some solid offense. It would amount to nothing though, as HOOK would handle business and pick up the victory.
Winner: HOOK
Cobb and Wheeler are set to face each other this Sunday at Forbidden door in a triple threat tag-team match for the ROH and NJPW tag titles. Although both of these men are tag-team wrestlers, they are also very good singles competitors. I love Cash Wheeler and I think he extremely underrated. Cobb is going to show a lot of people who he is with this match. This match will serve as a preview for what to expect this Sunday. A lot of people might not be familiar with Cobb, so having this match makes a lot of sense. They get to see what he is all about heading into Forbidden Door. These are two heavyweights with move sets like cruiserweights. This match was great and got me even more excited for Forbidden Door.
Great-O-Khan came out and was attacked by Dax Harwood. United Empire came down and pure chaos ensued. Chaos came out, United Empire came out, and Eddie Kingston came out. Just like on Dynamite, the show ended in chaos. A great show to lead to up to the pay-per-view this Sunday.
Winner: Jeff Cobb
Overall, I really enjoyed this AEW Rampage. I thought it was filled with good matches. Even though there wasn’t a lot on the card involving Forbidden Door, I still enjoyed it. I thought the ending was better than this week’s Dynamite.
