AEW Dynamite was packed full of action on Wednesday. There were two championship matches, plus some grudge matches. We are more than a week removed from Blood & Guts, so feuds are starting back up. Matches are also getting set for Fyter Fest, which is next week. In case you missed the show, this is everything that happened.
Ever since Wardlow got out of his contract with MJF and became a member of the official AEW roster, he has been on the hunt for the TNT Championship. Scorpio Sky is coming off of a feud with Sammy Guevara and was looking for his next challenger. Wardlow and Sky finally met on Dynamite in a Street Fight. Sky was accompanied to the ring by American Top Team members. They came into play during the match, but Wardlow had no problem dealing with them. Wardlow caused pure chaos in the match, which helped him become TNT Champion.
The TNT Championship seems like it has lost all of the prestige it once had. After being passed around frequently and involved in boring feud after boring feud, it needs help to become relevant once again. I love Scorpio Sky, but this title reign just didn’t do it. Mid-card titles are often looked at as the workhorse titles, being defended often. I think putting the title on Wardlow was a great decision. He has over fifty wins in his young AEW career, and I think he is the one who can bring back some prestige to the TNT Championship.
Winner: Wardlow
Mark Sterling and Tony Nese were backstage trying to collect signatures from the roster. They wanted the members of the roster to sign a petition to kick Swerve Strickland out of AEW. They first went up to Keith Lee, Strickland’s tag-team partner. Lee and Strickland have been having trust issues ever since Strickland eliminated Lee from the battle royal. Lee didn’t sign the petition and pretty much said that although they were having trust issues, they were still winning, and Strickland was still his tag-team partner.
Christian Cage has continued to shock wrestling fans everywhere. Ever since he turned on Jungle Boy and got Luchasaurus to align with him, he has been on a mean streak. Cutting brutal promo after brutal promo taking very personal shots at Jungle Boy and his family. Luchasaurus aligned himself with Cage and has also been on a mean streak. Tony Schiavone refused to hold the mic for them this time, so they cut a promo themselves. Cage didn’t get too far into it before Matt Hardy came out intent on defending Jungle Boy and his family, but Cage would go on to say some really mean stuff.
“You’re going to sit here and pretend all of a sudden you’re buddy-buddy with Jungle Boy. You’re starting to make your brother sound like the sober one,” Cage said.
Quote via AEW/Twitter
Matt’s brother, Jeff Hardy, was arrested and booked for a DUI last month. After Cage got his last words out, Luchasaurus attacked Hardy. He beat him on the outside of the ring and put Matt through the timekeeper’s table.
Cage has been on a tear since he turned heel. Giving him Luchasaurus was an incredibly smart move for both of them. Cage is reminding fans every week just how good he is at being the bad guy. We haven’t seen Jungle Boy since Cage hit him with a conchairto. I can’t wait for Jungle Boy to return and to watch these two men go at it.
Tony Schiavone was backstage with Claudio and Hager. Hager was claiming that Claudio knows he is not as tough as him. He also said he has never been a world champion and won’t be one in AEW. Claudio reminded Hager of who won at Blood & Guts, and he said he was going to be him for a third time, next week on Dynamite.
Claudio joined the AEW roster at Forbidden Door and competed in the Blood & Guts match last week. He and Hager have a history when they were in WWE together. I think Claudio is the most underrated wrestler in the world and I have been saying that for a long time. Hopefully, he is going to get a lot of success in AEW. It was nice to see that AEW has Hager some time on the mic. I also have noticed that AEW has been doing a no physicality clause during their interviews, which I love. There are so many times when people get attacked during an interview that it makes it pointless. Hopefully, they continue to do this because I think it is brilliant.
Lee and Strickland have been having a rocky go of things lately. Ever since Strickland eliminated Lee from the battle royal, the two have had trust issues. They have been winning regardless of what has been going on with them, though. Lee and Strickland are the No. 3 ranked tag team in the company and are looking to move past their trust issues by continuing to win. They faced off against the Butcher and the Blade, who are no pushovers. They are a physical and hard-hitting tag team that took Lee and Strickland to their limits. Lee and Strickland did end up winning, which was much needed for them.
After the match, Ricky Starks and Powerhouse Hobbs came out. They pretty much said they were tired of being disrespected and that Lee and Strickland were not on their level. The AEW Tag Team Champions, The Young Bucks, came out during Starks and Hobbs promo. The Young Bucks came out and told everyone not to forget who started the tag team division and who the best team in the world is. They challenged Starks and Hobbs and Lee and Strickland to a triple threat tag team match for the titles, next week on Dynamite.
I think AEW has the best tag team division in the world, and it is not even close. Starks and Hobbs are some of my favorites and I think they should have beaten Jurassic Express for the titles. I think Strickland is going to turn on Lee again after they lose the titles next week. I can’t wait for that match and for what is going to be a stacked show.
Winner: Keith Lee & Swerve Strickland
Tony Schiavone interviewed Eddie Kingston in the ring, now one week removed from the bloody and violent Blood & Guts match. He started by congratulating Wardlow and the members of Blackpool Combat Club, including Claudio, who he has a rich history with. Kingston was saying that Jericho made him a liar because he didn’t bleed, and he didn’t make Jericho tap. The interview got interrupted by footage on the jumbotron. The J.A.S was backstage and had Ruby Soho. Tai Conti slammed a car door on Soho’s arm. Jericho said he wanted to show Kingston how crazy he could get.
Kingston delivers a great promo every time he touches a mic. This interaction showed that the feud between Jericho and Kingston is far from over. I’m not sure what this is going to lead to, but I am excited about it.
AEW Dynamite was in Rochester, New York which is the home of the great Brodie Lee, who was the leader of the Dark Order. -1, who is Brodie Lee’s son, joined the group in the ring. The group went on to say that the six of them are here to stay and aren’t going anywhere.
QT Marshall came out and interrupted them. He said -1 took after his mother and not Brodie Lee. Marshall then said that he didn’t bring his friends out and told -1 to face him like a man. Hangman Page came out and the Dark Order beat Marshall to a pulp.
There has been a lot of speculation surrounding the Dark Order. Some members’ contracts have expired and have yet to be re-signed with the company. Now there are only six members in the group. I think this promo was important because it showed that the Dark Order is going to stick around. I love the Dark Order and I think they have been underutilized for a while. The fact that neither of them held tag team gold yet is a crime. Hopefully, they will get some gold or be given a relevant storyline.
Rush made his AEW debut at Forbidden Door when Andrade El Idolo announced he was the newest member of his team. Oscuro and Rey Fenix, his tag team partner, have been in a slump lately. Oscuro needed a win to get back on the right track. He and Rush are no strangers to each other, having faced numerous times in Mexico. They have a rivalry dating back five years. This was Rush’s first match in AEW, but he has been wrestling in Ring of Honor. This was a hard-hitting and brutal match. You could tell these men knew each other well and flat out didn’t like one another. Rush ended up getting the win with the help of Andrade El Idolo.
I loved this match a lot. If you haven’t watched it you should go back and do so. Both of these men are great singles wrestlers and they showcased their skills on AEW Dynamite. Andrade and Rush are building momentum, so this was an important win for Rush. I’m excited to see what the future holds for these men.
Winner: Rush
Singh, Lethal, and Dutt were backstage celebrating. It was made official that at Ring of Honor’s Death Before Dishonor pay-per-view, Samoa Joe will defend his ROH World Television Championship against Jay Lethal. Lethal has been calling out Joe for weeks, wanting him to defend the title against him. He finally got his wish and now the match is set for Death Before Dishonor.
The Acclaimed and the Gunn Club have had some tension as of late. Billy Gunn seemingly chose the Acclaimed over his own sons last week. While they were coming down to the ring, Austin Gunn took the mic from Max Caster, who usually raps down to the ring. That caused some trouble between the two teams. The teams weren’t really on the same page for the entire match but did end up picking up the victory. After the match, the Acclaimed and the Gunn Club began to argue. They would start to fight with each other and then Billy Gunn broke it up. After he broke it up, he attacked the Acclaimed and showed he was on the side of his sons.
I love the Acclaimed and the Gunn Club as a team. I’m sad to see them break up, especially since the Gunn Club wasn’t that great before teaming with the Acclaimed. I think the Acclaimed need a big push because they are really over and have a lot of momentum right now.
Winner: The Acclaimed & The Gunn Club
Miro was backstage at AEW Dynamite and cut a promo telling Malakai Black he was coming for him. The two met in a fatal four-way match at Forbidden Door for the All-Atlantic Championship. Neither man won, but their feud is not over. I’m all here for this feud to last however long it needs to. These are two of the best wrestlers on the roster, so I can’t wait for the match.
These four women have crossed paths many times over the last couple of weeks on AEW Dynamite. Shafir and Rose have been attacking Storm and Rosa after their matches, and the other always came down to their aid. Storm and Rosa are no strangers to each other having just fought for the AEW Women’s Championship at Forbidden Door. Thunder Rosa retained her title in what was an amazing match. Storm and Rosa picked up the win and showed that they can co-exist with each other.
This was interesting. It was a solid tag team match that was very physical. I thought that Storm might have turned on Rosa, but that didn’t happen. There isn’t a new challenger for Rosa yet, so I think Storm and Rosa might run it back and have a rematch sometime soon.
Winner: Toni Storm & Thunder Rosa (c)
Tony Schiavone was backstage with Jade Cargill, Stokely Hathaway, and The Baddies. Stokely revealed that Leila Grey was an interim Baddie and Jade let him know that if she messes up it is on him.
Tony Schiavone was backstage interviewing Daniel Garcia. Garcia said he was going to be challenging Wheeler Yuta for the Ring of Honor Pure Championship at Death Before Dishonor. The two met at AEW Dynamite Blood & Guts and now they are going to face each other for the ROH Pure Championship. These are two of the best young wrestlers in the world, so I can’t wait for them to go at it.
ROH, IWGP, and AAA Tag Team Champions FTR were backstage. They cut a promo on AEW Dynamite saying that they were challenging former ROH Tag Team Champions, the Brisco Brothers, to match at Death Before Dishonor for the ROH Tag Team Championships.
This was Jon Moxley’s first title defense since he became AEW Interim World Champion. He was facing off against the big bad Brody King. King earned a shot at the title by competing in and winning the royal rampage on last week’s episode of Rampage. This match was as physical as they come. Both men got in some damage, and it was a pretty even fight. King served as a tough opponent for Moxley, but Moxley ended up getting the win by submission on AEW Dynamite.
I thought that King being Moxley’s first challenger was good. He is big and physical, which helped prove that Moxley can take out anyone. I think the match was the best that it could be. It is going to be interesting to see who challenges Moxley next for the title.
Winner: Jon Moxley (c)
