AEW’s booking of the Trios Titles has been underwhelming

After months and months of fans clamoring for a factions-related title, the AEW World Trios Championship was established back in July of this year. The Trios tournament leading up to AEW’s All Out pay-per-view in September came with high-octane action and quality storytelling.

However, once the PPV rolled around, the House of Black went off the air, and The Elite won the tournament but had to quickly surrender the gold following a backstage incident with CM Punk. This led to their suspension and Death Triangle claiming the titles by defeating the Dark Order.

Since then, the booking has been poorly constructed and void of any storylines to intrigue viewers. The way many people envisioned these belts being added to the program was to enhance the use of AEW’s large number of factions.

Here is a list of AEW Factions: Death Triangle, The Factory, The Elite, Dark Order, Jericho Appreciation Society, The Blackpool Combat Club, The House of Black, The Acclaimed, The Firm, The Embassy, The Pinnacle, The Best Friends, Matt Hardy and Private Party, Jay Lethal’s faction, The Trustbusters, and Dalton Castle and the Boys. Altogether, I counted and listed off 16 Factions, most of which are severely underutilized.

There are hopes with the returns of The Elite and House of Black that Tony Khan and AEW can re-establish this division. Hopes remain that viewers can see a similar type of storytelling that we saw with feuds such as The Elite vs. The Best Friends, The Pinnacle vs. The Inner Circle, and even Death Triangle vs. The House of Black more recently.

The best-of-seven-match series between The Elite and Death Triangle is a solid starting point, but the trajectory of the building of these belts cannot be a series of stops and goes. Give us old-school turf wars, compelling promos, all-out brawls, and extreme matches, and make use of the excessive amount of Factions.

The other option is to disband the belts altogether before they end up being as misused as the WWE’s women’s tag titles have become.
