The tragic news of Dwayne Haskins has shocked everyone around the league. The 24-year-old NFL quarterback was involved in a car accident resulting in his passing. The news broke early Saturday morning as Adam Schefter tweeted out an obscenely insensitive comment initially describing struggles Haskins experienced in the NFL before releasing the news of his death.
The tweet has rightfully been deleted; however, many have expressed their frustration with the inconsiderate remarks by Schefter.
Athletes are people. They are not solely on this earth for our entertainment. When a 24-year-old loses his young life in a tragic accident, how can you break the news by describing struggles in his life? Adam Schefter is a good reporter, one of the best in the business. But the humanity and respect for the players that give him his livelihood is nonexistent.
Unfortunately, it gets worse with more heartless people giving their unwelcome opinion on Haskins. Ex VP of player personnel for the Cowboys and Pro Football HOF Gil Brandt expressed his thoughts on Dwayne Haskins on NFL Radio after the news broke. Brandt followed Haskins throughout his career and upon hearing the news of his untimely death, Brandt said
“He was a guy that was living to be dead.”
“It was always something” with Haskins
“Maybe it he stayed in school a year he wouldn’t do silly things [like] jogging on a highway.”
The full interview can be heard here.
To tell the world and describe a successful man as such, hours after his death, is beyond unacceptable. Gil Brandt’s disgusting comments are another example of how some people treat athletes less than human. These same athletes who Gil Brandt and many others rely on to make a living.
Fortunately there has been a significant amount of backlash towards Schefter and Brandt. Dez Bryant expressed his thoughts on Schefter’s original tweet.
The resounding support behind Dez Bryant and other athlete’s speaking up against insensitive comments like this will hopefully lead to a more humane comments regarding sensitive news.
