Abraham Toro did not have a ton of options this offseason. However, it felt clear to him that the Red Sox felt like the right fit. While the Yankees also showed interest, Toro valued the opportunity to reunite with a special someone in Boston. It wasn’t just about the rivalry—it was about where he saw the best path forward.
The veteran infielder has bounced around Major League Baseball in recent years. However, the former Astros draft pick made his way through the minors in Houston’s system. During that time, he grew close with current Sox manager Alex Cora, who was the bench coach in H-Town back in 2017. When you connect the dots, it is glaringly clear why Toro opted to ship up to Boston. He shared his thoughts recently on his connection:
“For me, a lot of it was Cora because I’ve seen him over the years,” Toro told MassLive’s Chris Cotillo. “He’s a guy that uses everybody on the team. A guy like me, maybe being a bench guy, it was something that was pretty attractive.”
“The fact they were the only teams, and it’s the biggest rivalry in baseball, it was funny,” Toro said.
While Boston has struggled in the opening third of 2025 (currently 30-34), Toro has found a groove as a utility man. He owns a .304/.310/.493 slash line in 21 appearances. It’s clear he is benefiting from Cora’s trust and bond. You can point to a variety of mishaps that management has committed this season, but thankfully, giving Toro a chance is not one of them.
Now that he’s settled in Boston, Toro is focused on proving he made the right call. He’s off to a solid start, flashing the versatility and bat-to-ball skills the Red Sox hoped for. With more opportunities coming his way, Toro’s looking to turn a fresh start into a meaningful year that proves he belongs in the big leagues.
