Aaron Rodgers Has High Praise For Darnell Washington

We know DK Metcalf is going to be the alpha target in Pittsburgh. But who will emerge as the secondary option? The tight ends with Aaron Rodgers could prove to be a big factor, and the new Steelers quarterback is quite fond of Darnell Washington.

Rodgers has some serious praise for Washington and immediately comped him to former teammate, Marcedes Lewis.

VIA Penn Live:

“I told Darnell [Washington] today I haven’t had a tight end like him since Marcedes [Lewis],” Rodgers said. “And Marcedes, all-time great. Darnell is like a young Marcedes, able to do things in the passing game and dominate the line of scrimmage.”

Lewis and Washington are roughly the same size. Both are houses at over 6-foot-6, and Washington probably even has more weight on him. Pat Freiermuth is going to be the primary starter, but Washington will still be featured a ton in 12 as a blocker and occasional pass catcher.

Lewis and Rodgers played together in Green Bay from 2018 to 2022. Lewis wasn’t exactly a dynamic receiving option, but that was also after being at an advanced age and playing 12 years prior with the Jaguars. Washington is still young and has room to grow. All I’m saying is he could ultimately become a bigger part of the offense than anyone is thinking right now.

We also know this. Trust is a big factor when it comes to Rodgers. He simply won’t throw them the ball if he doesn’t trust that target. Food for thought…
