Sean McDermott Compared His Receivers To Smurfs

The Buffalo Bills are going with a new strategy. After the failed Kelvin Benjamin trade, the Bills are going small. Buffalo signed Cole Beasley and John Brown this offseason who both check in under 6-foot. Zay Jones and Robert Foster will also get their targets and they are both under 6-foot-2. Is this concerning?

Well, Bills head coach Sean McDermott did little to quiet those concerns. Instead, he called the Smurfs:

“I would say, with all of our wide receivers, they’re kinda like Smurfs. If you’ve ever watched the Smurfs, they live in like a small village so they can separate in small places. And all of our receivers are like this tall,” McDermott said while making a hand gesture indicating how short they are, via Heather Prusak of WGRZ.

Bold strategy. Nobody likes a short man joke. I don’t love the response. He should have something like “I don’t care how tall they are, they get open”. This feels very New England. It seems like they rarely have tall receivers on the roster. Randy Moss was the one exception. Regardless, I think Buffalo did the smart thing. We all know that Josh Allen isn’t the most accurate guy in the world. Prioritizing great route running over size makes sense. Let’s also be honest, anything and I mean anything is better than Kelvin Benjamin.

The Bills are an interesting team in 2019. We know the Patriots are the Patriots. Who is the 2nd best team in the AFC East? It could be Buffalo. It’s going to be a battle of 2018 NFL Draft quarterbacks. Josh Rosen, Sam Darnold, and Josh Allen duking it out. At the end of the day, nothing else matters. Josh Allen needs to take the next step towards becoming a franchise quarterback.
