Ed Oliver believes he will ‘outplay’ his $68 million contract extension

After signing a huge four-year, $68 million extension, Buffalo Bills defensive tackle Ed Oliver believes he will ‘outplay’ his new contract.

Although Oliver received his massive deal, he has yet to make a Pro Bowl or an All-Pro appearance. For that money, it makes you question if he is really worth that money. But he certainly is in the long run. Oliver came off a season with career lows in sacks, solo tackles and finished with 34 tackles, one more than his career of 33 set in 2020.

(All quotes are from PFT.)

“I don’t feel any pressure; I feel like I’m going to outplay the contract, to be honest,” Oliver said Tuesday, via Ryan O’Halloran of The Buffalo News. “I just want to shut everybody up who said I was overpaid [with the new contract]. Just sit back and watch me.”

Bills general manager Brandon Beane gave Oliver some praise in his game long-term. Beane believes Oliver has his best football ahead of him, which is why he is comfortable giving him a long-term deal.

“[Defensive tackle] is a premium position in our league,” Beane said. “They’re hard to find, especially if you’re having the success we have and where we draft [late in the first round].”

The Bills selected Oliver No. 9 overall in the 2019 NFL draft. Since then, Oliver has accumulated 151 total tackles, 14.5 sacks, four forced fumbles and one safety in 62 career games (53 starts).

“I feel comfortable here, I love it here, I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else,” Oliver said. “I wouldn’t want any [other] fan base than ours. When you’re driving down Big Tree [Road] and people kind of know your car, and you’re driving by, they go, ‘Let’s go, Ed,’ that’s nothing like I’ve ever seen before.”
