Zlatan Ibrahimović to leave AC Milan

Zlatan Ibrahimović will leave AC Milan on a free transfer this summer, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Ibrahimović has decided to not renew his contract with Milan and will depart following the team’s final game against Hellas Verona this weekend.

The 41-year-old Swedish star has had a difficult 2022-23 season. He has only played in four Serie A games and has been on the field for a mere 144 total minutes, which is just over a game and half of total action.

Zlatan did, however, become the oldest goalscorer in Serie A history in March after scoring a penalty in Milan’s 3-1 loss to Udinese. It was his only goal this season.

This was Ibrahimović’s second stint with AC Milan. He first joined AC Milan on loan from Barcelona during the 2010-11 season. The following season, he joined AC Milan fulltime but left to join PSG after just one year.

He returned to Milan in 2020 following a year with the LA Galaxy. He has been AC Milan for over three seasons now.

During his time with Milan, Ibrahimović has won two Scudetto titles: one in 2011 and one last season.

Although Ibrahimović will not be available for selection against Hellas Verona, the club will honor the legendary striker following the game.

AC Milan will bid farewell to Zlatan Ibrahimović with a brief ceremony involving all the crowd,” an AC Milan spokesperson said, via ESPN. “AC Milan would like to thank Zlatan for the magnificent years we spent together.”

What’s next for Ibrahimović is uncertain, but it is unlikely that we have seen the last of him. There have been rumors floating around about Zlatan potentially moving to fellow Serie A side Monza. Monza are currently in 10th place in the league and would offer him the opportunity to continue playing at a high level.

No matter what the future holds for Zlatan Ibrahimović, it is hard to deny how special of a player he is. He has aged like fine wine throughout the years, continuing to play for elite teams even in his forties.

Luckily for us, it seems like Zlatan is never going to retire. We will likely be dazzled by his on-field play and off-field cockiness for at least one more season.
