It’s 1:30 AM on the East coast and I’m ready for bed. Then I check Twitter right before and well, Conor McGregor announces his retirement from the sport of MMA? Wait what? Who knows if he’s trolling or actually retiring but if you take his word for this tweet literally, McGregor is done fighting.
McGregor, 30, is the first two simultaneous division champ in the history of the UFC. McGregor has held both the lightweight and featherweight championship belt. He defeated Jose Aldo for the featherweight title and Eddie Alvarez for the lightweight title. After that, McGregor’s eye of the tiger clearly faded and lost the drive to fight.
This next quote that he said on the Tonight Show says everything that you need to know.
“I don’t necessarily need to fight. I am set for life, my family is set for life, we are good. But I am eager to fight so we’ll see what happens. I’m just staying ready as I like to say.”
McGregor has made a ton of money so it’s hard to blame him for hanging up the gloves. Once that eye of the tiger fades, it’s tough to go out there and fight. McGregor was humiliated by Khabib Nurmagomedov in his last fight. Mainly because McGregor can’t wrestle but also partially because he is more worried about promoting Proper 12 Whiskey instead of training.
McGregor’s net worth is currently $99 million. He was scheduled to fight Donald Cowboy Cerrone in his next fight but negotiations with Dana White became complicated. Time will tell if this is a negotiating tactic or if McGregor is truly done with the sport. He certainly doesn’t need the money.
