Noah Syndergaard Is NOT HAPPY The Mets Haven’t Paid Jacob deGrom Yet

Justin Verlander, Blake Snell, and Chris Sale all agreed to contract extensions prior to the start of the 2019 MLB season. Jacob deGrom is one ace that hasn’t been extended yet. Fellow Mets starter, Noah Syndergaard would like you to know that he’s not happy with the front office. He thinks deGrom should have already been handed a new contract.

“Jake’s the best pitcher in baseball right now. I think he deserves whatever amount he’s worth. I want to keep him happy, so when it does come time for him to reach free agency, he stays on our side pitching for the Mets. I just think they should quit all this fuss and pay the man already,” Syndergaard told reporters Sunday.

Well said. Can’t really argue it. The problem is because deGrom got to the majors so late, the Mets have years of control left. deGrom won’t hit free agency until after the 2020 season at age 33. The Mets have to be careful because of that age.

What’s more hilarious is that Syndergaard has really been critical of the Mets. His name was floated in trade rumors this winter and he’s really letting the comments fly. He is not happy about the Mets travel plans prior to Opening Day.

“I don’t know whose idea that was, but it’s not a smart one,” he said. “I don’t think that’s conducive for winning ballgames, really — that much travel. I mean, I’m sure the amenities in Syracuse aren’t the best for a Major League Baseball team to go up there and have one last workout before the regular season starts, but those kinds of decisions are above my pay grade.”

The Mets are just funny. It’s one of those franchises that never gets it right even when they make smart decisions. The NL East is going to be a dog fight and the Mets find themselves in rocky waters with an important piece before the season even begins. I wonder what will happen to Syndergaard after these comments.
