Texas Tech just finished it’s third straight losing season which means they are not bowl eligible. After losing to pathetic Baylor 35-24, the program is going to make changes. Head coach Kliff Kingsbury is going to get the boot. He has been fired. The program has not confirmed the rumor at this time but it seems like a foregone conclusion.

“SAN ANTONIO — According to KENS 5 Sports Director Joe Reinagel, New Braunfels High School product Kliff Kingsbury is no longer the head coach at Texas Tech.”

Kingsbury, 39, spent the past 6 years as the head coach of Texas Tech. His record of 35-40 is pretty underwhelming, to say the least. He’s never won 7 games in a year and no more than 4 in Conference play. I’m not sure the record tells the full story. That doesn’t mean he hasn’t had an impact on the program.

Kliff Kingsbury has been a quarterback whisperer. He was the offensive coordinator at Texas A&M with Johnny Manziel. He also responsible for recruiting Baker Mayfield, Davis Webb, and Patrick Mahomes during his tenure with Tech. The former Mike Leach disciple can certainly coach. Obviously, Kingsbury has underachieved this year but the offense really hasn’t been the issue. He’s gotten excellent quarterback play.

Ranking of New Hires in College Football

With Kingsbury headed elsewhere, once again he leaves the program in good hands. He’s recruited two more excellent quarterbacks in Allan Bowman and Jett Duffey. Bowman is a true Freshman who just completed 69 percent of his throws but his season was cut short because of a lung injury. Duffey, who is more of a dual-threat option, was also banged up with a knee injury.
This isn’t the last we will see of Kingsbury. I’m curious to see if he will seek a job as an NFL offensive coordinator. With the NFL becoming more and more spread, Kingsbury is an interesting candidate for teams to monitor.
