The Kansas City Chiefs are without a first-round pick in 2018 after the Pat Mahomes trade from the 2017 Draft. The Chiefs have turned their roster upside down after dealing away Marcus Peters. Kendall Fuller has now been brought in to try to replace him. Fuller was part of the Alex Smith deal with the Redskins. The biggest question heading into 2018 is whether Mahomes is ready. Having said that, what can we expect from the Kansas City Chiefs during the 2018 NFL Draft?
Kansas City is all in after signing Sammy Watkins to a mega contract. He will make more money than Travis Kelce, Kareem Hunt, Pat Mahomes, and Tyreek Hill combined. Watkins has been a disappointment but Andy Reid must have some genius plan up his sleeve.
Considering KC is without a first rounder, their first pick isn’t until the 54th selection. My guess is that the Chiefs still have to be thinking corner. David Amerson was signed earlier this year but the Chiefs secondary corner spot still was terrible even with Peters in town. Donte Jackson of LSU could be a target. Jackson ran a 4.32 at the combine and played well in the SEC. LSU has a good track record of producing defensive backs including Tre’Davious White a year ago. Jackson could be their guy.
KC also has two third-round selections. I would expect an offensive line and defensive line to be the area of focus. Braden Smith and Rasheem Green are two guys the Chiefs could wind up with. Smith was a talented guard at Auburn. He got his doors blow off when I watched him against Clemson but played well at the Senior Bowl. Green was one of USC’s more talented defenders. Green fits that hybrid system the Chiefs run. Green had a really impressive 40 time – 4.73 and is a really athletic defensive tackle that can move around on sub packages.
