USC Athletic Director Mike Bohn Resigns
The University of Southern California is back to the drawing board following the resignation of athletic director Mike Bohn Friday due to health challenges. Bohn held the position at USC for three years.
Bohn signed as the athletic director after his predecessor and football star Lynn Swann resigned in 2019.
Coming from Cincinnati, USC alums, students and fans speculated why USC President Carol Folt hired Bohn. Let’s take a look back at what Bohn did as the athletic director for the Trojans.
The Good Things
Bohn’s most surprising and best decision in his tenure was when he announced that USC would join the Big Ten. Fans did not agree with this decision initially because of the travel, competition with perennial powerhouses Michigan and Ohio State and the Midwest’s weather conditions.
The move is the best for USC as the Pac-12 is slowly disbanding, with most of the teams rumored to join other conferences. The Trojans will also be handed a ridiculous amount of TV money from the Big Ten, with a deal reportedly worth $100 million annually, according to USC Annenberg Media.
The next best thing was when Bohn signed head coach Lincoln Riley from Oklahoma to a 10-year contract worth $110 million. Despite USC’s terrible defense in 2022, Riley was the Trojans’ best head coach since the Pete Carroll era. The well-constructed team under Riley made fans forget the terrible six years under Clay Helton.
In Riley’s first year he went 11-3, brought in 26 players from the transfer portal and coached Caleb Williams to a Heisman Trophy bringing in the eighth award, including Reggie Bush, to the program.
Not only did Bohn turn around the football program but all of the school’s sports programs. USC has successfully brought in top-rated recruits in men’s and women’s basketball and gave track and field athlete Allyson Felix the honor of having the field named after her.
Bohn was beloved by fans, alumni, players and students at the school. Folt needs to find the next athletic director to take over and continue the dynasty that USC is becoming again.
