Brock Purdy will ‘be the exact same guy’ according to Kyle Shanahan

After tearing his UCL and undergoing surgery this offseason, many wonder if Brock Purdy will repeat his success from last season. The former Mr. Irrelevant suffered the injury during the 49ers’ first offensive possession of the NFC Championship — essentially leaving them dead in the water without a viable option at quarterback.

Kyle Shanahan recently spoke about Purdy’s recovery and the timeline for his potential return.

As long as Brock’s elbow heals right, he’ll be the exact same guy,” Shanahan said, via 49ersWebZone.com. “And when you have a clean break like that or tear, it will be. You can have a setback, and you can have something heal wrong, but everything’s been completely on pace.”

The 49ers head coach also went into detail about the specific physical progress Purdy is making in recovery.

And just watching him now, he’s doing the same drills all the other quarterbacks are doing,” Shanahan said. “He’s just using a towel to throw, but still doing violent motion, still moving it. He’s just not doing with the football. He’ll get closer to that, and as long as there’s not a setback, we think he’ll be there in training camp.”

This is amazing news for 49ers fans who have been given very vague answers regarding Purdy’s return. Purdy entered last season as the third quarterback on the depth chart before being thrust into the starting role in Week 13. He did not lose a game as a starter until he tore his UCL against Philadelphia.

San Francisco still has one of the most complete teams in the NFL from top to bottom. Purdy’s healthy will play a big factor in their success this season.

Who will start for the 49ers at QB in Week 1?

Shanahan and the 49ers have some decisions to make regarding their quarterbacks before the season starts. Former third overall pick Trey Lance broke his ankle in Week 1 of last season. The team’s backup, Jimmy Garoppolo, took over as the starter before suffering a foot injury of his own in Week 13.

This gave way to the sensation that became Purdy. The former Iowa State quarterback played with the composure of a seasoned veteran during his eight games as a starter for the 49ers.

Purdy would likely be the unquestioned stater currently if it were not for his torn UCL. The 49ers apparently spoke to multiple teams about the potential of a deal involving Lance this offseason.

Obviously a deal was not reached involving Lance. Him remaining in San Francisco, for the time being, will set the stage for a potential training camp position battle at quarterback — assuming Purdy is healthy enough to compete.
