Look we already know the NFL is far superior to the NBA for a variety of reasons and the gap has really been highlighted through recent viewership. Watching the NBA playoffs this year just reminds me again of why they are so far behind. I can only imagine how much better this league could be if they simply reduced the number of games in an NBA Playoff series.
There’s a reason the play-in has been such a massive success. It’s added genuine excitement and parity as everything comes down to one game giving it a March Madness-esque feeling. The NBA Playoffs need more of that, and like fast.
Now I understand that simply making the entire tournament based around one-off games is far too drastic of a change but I don’t need to see competitive teams play each other for seven games. I would argue a three-game series or even a five-game series is MORE than enough, not just to see who’s the better team but also for player health and entertainment value.
Good teams will always make series competitive and so the problem in the status quo is that a Game 1 victory doesn’t really even matter. The team will have so many chances to recover and bounce back in a long drawn-out seven-game series that the games only really start to matter once Game 4 or 5 rolls around. The first three games are literally irrelevant, and on the off-chance a team goes up 3-0, we clearly don’t need to see that series go one more. That’s my problem with the NBA Playoffs, and it’s a shame more people haven’t realized it yet.
The NBA also is too money hungry to reduce the number of games, but a shorter NBA Playoffs would be what’s best for the game. Players have to play less taxing games and fans get more enjoyable, higher stake games. It’s a shame it will likely never happen, at least in the near future.
