Have the Kansas City Chiefs lost their minds? Have the Chiefs ever even watched Sammy Watkins play? Watkins who spent this past year with the Rams was originally drafted by the Bills in 2014. Watkins will now join his 3rd team heading into his 5th NFL season. Watkins will sign a three-year, $48 million deal with Kansas City to join big red.

NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport was the first to report the news:

It wasn’t too long ago that Buffalo declined Watkins 5th-year option because they didn’t think he was that good. Watkins, the former 4th overall pick in 2014, he was traded to the Rams this past year for a second-round pick and corner E.J. Gaines who played really well for the Bills in 2017. Watkins only reeled in 39 catches and hasn’t played a full 16 game season since his rookie year. Watkins now gives the Chiefs a wide receiver to pair with Tyreek Hill.

LA would have loved to keep Watkins long-term but they decided to franchise tag Lamarcus Joyner instead. The Rams have totally rebuilt that secondary bringing in Marcus Peters and Aqib Talib in what was already a really good Wade Phillips defense. With the Rams needing to rework Aaron Donald’s new contract that expires after the 2018 season.

Interestingly enough, Watkins now makes more money than Patrick Mahomes, Tyreek Hill, Travis Kelce, and Kareem Hunt combined. Albert Wilson will now leave the organization for the Dolphins where Watkins will take that role in the Chiefs starting lineup. It’s going to be interesting to see how Andy Reid uses the former first-round pick from Clemson because the new quarterback, Pat Mahomes, is known as a strong-armed guy who likes to take shots down the field. KC handed the keys to Mahomes after they dealt Alex Smith to the Redskins.
