What is the WWE Draft and how does it work?

This week’s episode of WWE Friday Night Smackdown on April 28th will be the start of the 2023 WWE Draft. It’s been a popular tool used by WWE to help engage fans with the brand split since the birth of WWE Friday Night Smackdown. Essentially, it is designed to separate the roster into two separate groups. One of those groups would be designated to WWE Monday Night RAW and the other to Smackdown.

One of the main benefits of the Draft is the ability to keep the product fresh and create new matchups. With each draft, you can definitely expect at least a couple of big-time superstars to switch brands. WWE has even gone as far as to switch champions through the draft. There was a legendary moment in the past when Becky Lynch and Charlotte Flair had to trade championships because of it.

The rules are not formally written down anywhere. This can be seen as a pro and a con. It allows for the WWE to basically do whatever they want via the draft, but it can also make things a bit confusing. Sometimes a pick will be one member of a team or faction. But in years past, we have also seen examples of brands drafting entire teams or factions with one singular pick. Do not get too confused if this happens again this year, just enjoy the ride.

In years past, there have been several different layouts to the draft. There have been lottery drawings to assign wrestlers to each roster and there have even been years where general managers are making the picks for their respective brands. There are currently no proper on-screen GMs, so one could assume they will be doing a lottery-type draft this year.

In conclusion, the WWE draft may be one of the most challenging things in WWE to explain. There really are no formal rules and the previous drafts have been so different throughout the years.

Based on everything currently happening on WWE television, this one could be the most exciting yet. Whichever brand is left without Roman Reigns will crown a NEW World Heavyweight Champion. Triple H promised this draft would change the game.
