49ers Sign Ex-Seahawks Corner Richard Sherman To Three-Year Deal

Richard Sherman is now on the revenge path. After being released by the Seattle Seahawks earlier in the week, the division rival San Francisco 49ers scooped him up fairly quickly after his release. The former member of the Legion of Boom now gives the 49ers a number one corner the shadow the team’s best wide receiver.

Adam Schefter of ESPN was the first to report the news:

The NFC West is getting very interesting. The Rams have also added Marcus Peters, Sam Shields, and Aqib Talib this offseason. With the Rams bolstering their secondary, the 49ers now add Sherman who is one of the top five corners in the NFL. Sherman isn’t lacking confidence either. His numbers speak for themselves and the former Seahawk has the best statistics in the league since 2011.

The San Fran, Sherman connection makes a lot of sense. Sherman went to Stanford University when he played for Jim Harbaugh which is located fairly close to the 49ers facility. Sherman went to dinner with head coach Kyle Shanahan after Sherman was released so he clearly has respect for the brilliant offensive coach. Defensive coordinator Robert Saleh also coached Sherman in Seattle from 2011-2013.

Sherman was highly coveted despite coming off a torn Achilles. He also had a bone spur removed in the other leg. Sherman, 29, still has a ton of years left and his 6-foot-3 frame makes him a difficult assignment for any receiver. With Sherman, are the 49ers Super Bowl contenders? With Jimmy Garopolo undefeated in his 5 starts with the 49ers, San Fran is a scary team on the rise. Sherman will be awfully motivated to face the Seahawks twice a year that could have also been part of his reason for picking the 49ers.
