Nick Bosa ‘promised to haunt’ Steve Keim for drafting Kyler Murray

Former Arizona Cardinals general manager Steve Keim detailed his pre-draft experience with Nick Bosa on Colin Cowherd’s, “The Herd.”

After ten seasons with the Cardinals, Keim recently stepped down from the position after a miserable 2022 season. Head coach Kliff Kingsbury was also fired following the end of the season. During his interview with Colin Cowherd, Keim described his and Kingsbury’s experience with Bosa’s pre-draft visit.

When Kliff Kingsbury and I got together to go to see players and have dinners, we went to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and had dinner with Nick Bosa prior to the draft. And loved him, obviously,” Keim said. “Our highest-graded guy on the board. Amazing in every way.”

Arizona held the No. 1 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. The team decided to draft their franchise quarterback in Kyler Murray. Bosa, the eventual 2022 DPOY, went second overall to division-rival San Francisco. According to Keim’s interview, Bosa essentially predicted this is what would happen.

He puts his arm around me and Kliff Kingsbury, both of us, in basically a headlock,” Keim said. “I think you guys are going to end up taking that little quarterback, and if you do,’ he looked over at me and said, ‘Steve, I will haunt you for the rest of your career.’”

While Keim’s career as the Cardinals GM is over, Bosa certainly lived up to his statement. Minus missing the 2020 season with a torn ACL, Bosa has been, at times, unstoppable during his time in the NFL. He deservingly won the NFL 2022 DPOY award, and led a dominant defense with a career high 18.5 sacks. Nick Bosa obviously took being drafted second overall personally.

Arizona is the NFL’s Dumpster Fire Currently

The Cardinals organization has been gutted and turned upside down in the span of one season. A new head coach, new general manager and controversy surrounding the team’s owner all have occurred in that time. Currently holding the third overall selection in the draft, the one position Arizona surprisingly does not need is at quarterback.

Murray, who is recovering from a torn ACL, is the one player in Arizona who seems secure for the moment. The other top four overall draft picks are held by teams in need of a quarterback, making the Cardinals third overall pick a hot commodity. With C.J. Stroud and Bryce Young likely to be gone with the first two selections, multiple teams have inquired with Arizona about trading up to the third pick.

Arizona would be foolish and stubborn if they choose to hold onto the pick. Even if players like Will Anderson Jr. and Jalen Carter end up being Pro Bowl caliber players, it will not make an immediate difference for the Cardinals. Expecting either player to make a Bosa level impact is also foolish.

They should focus on accumulating as much draft capital as possible in order to begin a full rebuild. The Arizona Cardinals will likely remain the doormat of the NFC West even with the perfect draft.
