The Oklahoma Sooners struggled in 2022. Under new head coach Brent Venables, they were expected to be competitive in the Big 12. Competitive they were not, finishing 6-7 on the year. They still have a few guys in the draft cycle this year, and in this article, we will be looking at Wanya Morris. What does his draft profile look like? Let’s talk about it.
Morris was a five-star recruit in the 2019 class, ranked as OT5, originally committing to Tennessee. He played in 13 games as a true freshman and nine the year after, logging over 1,000 snaps for the Vols and allowing seven sacks. He transferred to Oklahoma in 2021 and played in 15 games total in his final two seasons. He saw a hair over 700 snaps and allowed four sacks.
Wanya Morris tore his hamstring running the 40-yard dash. Very unfortunate. Trey has the full OL notes here.
I think there’s something here. Five-star guys just don’t forget how to play football. Morris excels in pass pro, using quick feet to slide where he needs to be. Smooth kickback. He’s got a pretty mean first punch. Real knee bender. He has a bit of nasty to him when run blocking as well. I think he could make a very interesting guard move in the NFL, or play at right tackle.
While he is better in pass pro, he can be a little sloppy at times. Consistency is an issue. When he gets to the next level on run plays, he looks like he gets lost occasionally. Punch is great, but he needs to clean up where it lands. I’d like to see him keep that back flat more all the way through reps.
I kind of like Wanya Morris more than his running mate Anton Harrison (draft profile can be seen here). Something just itches my brain right? I’m not sure he’s a top-10 tackle in this class, but well worth a fourth-round pick. He’s got the tools to become a nice backup and potential above-average starter.
