Maryland Football Returns to Classic Script Uniforms
After years of anticipation, Maryland Football has announced that they will be reintroducing their classic “Script Terps” uniforms as the primary uniforms for the upcoming season and beyond. This news has brought great excitement to fans and players alike, as the script uniforms are a beloved part of the program’s history.
The uniforms were first introduced in 1982 and quickly became a staple of the Maryland Football program. They featured a red helmet with white “Terps” in iconic script. After retirement as the primary design, the classic uniforms popped up here and there over the years. From 2001-2010, UMD donned white helmets with Script Terps in red font on the side. The retro design has made an appearance every season since Mike Locksley became the head coach in 2019.
In recent years, the Terrapins have worn a variety of uniforms, including the bold “Maryland Pride” edition as their most recent primaries. Although well-received by some, many fans have been calling for a return to the classic look.
Maryland AD Damon Evans’ Statement
Maryland Athletic Director Damon Evans released a statement on the reintroduction of the script uniforms. He said the classic design reflects the rich history and tradition of Maryland Football.
Evans has been a driving force behind many changes and improvements to UMD athletics in recent years. The decision to bring back Script Terps full-time is the latest example of his commitment to the program.
The script uniforms will make their return to the field in the Terrapins’ regular season home opener against Towson on September 2.
