Giants sign CB Amani Oruwariye

The New York Giants are signing former Detroit Lions cornerback Amani Oruwariye to a one-year contract, according to NFL insider Jordan Schultz.

Oruwariye, 27, enjoyed a career year in 2021 with the Lions, totaling six interceptions and 11 passes defended. He had a much more pedestrian 2022 season, starting only five games with zero interceptions and three passes defended. Oruwariye, who was playing in the final year of his rookie contract, played poorly enough to lose his starting spot last season.

Clearly, 2022 was a step back for the former Penn State fifth-round pick. He even suffered an NFL-low PFF grade of 30.0. Now, Oruwariye has the chance to revitalize his career in a new city.

Detroit is fine with releasing Oruwariye. In fact, they’ve already done a nice job of seeking out his replacement signing Emmanuel Moseley, Cameron Sutton and C.J. Gardner-Johnson to bolster their secondary.

The Giants remain in search of their second cornerback. Adoree’ Jackson is the undisputed top corner on the team, but around him, New York doesn’t have a ton of depth. Their CB2 last season was veteran Fabian Moreau, who remains an unrestricted free agent as of Thursday. Now with the addition of Oruwariye, there will likely be an open competition in camp amongst Cordale Flott, Nick McCloud and Aaron Robinson.

Oruwariye does sport good size and skills you’d like for a starting cornerback. He stands at 6-foot-2, 205 pounds, with solid speed. Giants fans have learned to trust defensive coordinator Wink Martindale to scheme his player’s strengths.

Lions fans were very disappointed with Oruwariye’s performance in 2022. He showed flashes of greatness in his first three seasons, getting better and better every season up until 2022.

We can never really understand why some players have disappointing seasons. This is especially true when they show promise and there are no injury concerns involved. It’s clear that the Lions were fine with moving on with Oruwariye. For the Giants’ sake, they’re hoping that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.
