Some teams in the NFL just don’t have a clue what they’re doing. The Miami Dolphins don’t see to understand how the rules in the NFL work. Nevertheless, the Dolphins placed the franchise tag on Jarvis Landry despite having next to no cap space. Apparently, the Dolphins have a method behind their madness and are now trying to trade him.
Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk was the first to report the news:
“There’s another possible message that the quick decision to tag receiver Jarvis Landry sends to other teams, other than, “Don’t tamper with him next week.” And the message may be this: “Make us an offer.”
A league source tells PFT that the quick tag is being interpreted as a desire by the Dolphins to trade Landry.”
Miami can’t even trade Landry unless he signs his franchise tender. Essentially Landry can block any potential trade because he doesn’t need to sign the tender that holds leverage over any negotiation. That’s not to mention that any team acquiring Landry would have to pay him the full franchise tag value of approximately $16 million for the upcoming season. No team would trade for Landry under that price tag without working out a long-term deal. This proposition seems flat-out impossible.
Miami tried to trade Landry this past year but decided to part with Jay Ajayi instead. With Miami trying to trade Landry, it’s hard to see this marriage working for the long haul. Landry, 25, has topped 1,100 yards in two his first four years in the NFL. Landry also reeled in a career-high nine touchdowns in 2017 along with 112 receptions. However, he did only average 8.8 yards per catch which is the lowest of his career. At this point, Landry is really a glorified slot receiver.
