Chiefs Sign Jawaan Taylor to 4-year deal
The Chiefs keep this crazy day of free agency going as they sign RT Jawaan Taylor to a 4-year deal worth $80 million. The deal includes a whopping $60 million in guaranteed money and should be an upgrade for a Chiefs offensive line that was already one of the best in the league.
The deal with full details was first reported on by Ian Rapoport.
Taylor should serve as the Orlando Brown replacement after the Chiefs decided against resigning the stud LT. The Chiefs also lost another piece of their offensive line with Andrew Wylie signing a three-year deal with Washington.
It’s clear that this Chiefs’ offensive line, which ranked second in pass protection, is taking a hit this period. But the addition of Taylor should give Mahomes that blindside protection that every franchise QB needs.
The only question now is can Jawaan Taylor make the switch to Left Tackle? In his four seasons at Jacksonville, he only logged 18 snaps at LT and served primarily as a Right Tackle. While this switch doesn’t seem like it would be that big of a deal, having to protect the blindside of your QB is an added level of pressure you need to put on yourself.
Aside from being one of the better tackles in the NFL, is the durability Taylor has been able to show. Since being drafted in 2019 Taylor has started in every available game. A feat that a lot of players at his position cannot say they have completed.
Taylor was considered one of the best tackles available on the market. And with the rival Broncos signing Mike McGlinchey to a massive deal, the pressure immediately was on the Chiefs to replace Orlando Brown.
And so in signing Jawaan Taylor the Chiefs were able to do just that. They fill a big hole with someone more than capable of holding down that very position. But It will be interesting to see how Taylor adjusts to the switch. But based on his technique and overall play I expect it to be a seamless transition.
They say the rich get richer, and with this move, the Chiefs did just that. The former Super Bowl champs were seemingly able to replace a position that became a weakness as they attempt to repeat as champions.
