New York Giants have placed the non-exclusive tag on Saquon Barkley

The time has finally counted down to zero. New York has finally given franchise running back Saquon Barkley, the non-exclusive tag. This allows any other team to match an offer sheet for Barkley. According to Mike Garafolo.

After the Daniel Jones contract hiatus, the New York Giants have placed Saquon Barkley on the non-exclusive franchise tag. This means any team can place an offer, the Giants can then match that offer. If the Giants match the offer for Barkley, he will then sign with that other team. In compensation, the Giants will receive two first-round picks for Barkley. An example of this scenario would be Lamar Jackson’s tag. Barkley will receive $10.091 million for his non-exclusive franchise tag. Barkley originally wanted around $16 million a year. That is absurd. For an aging running back with injury concerns, no thank you. The Giants would eventually settle for the tag and will now negotiate further long-term contract talk.

In last year’s campaign, Barkley proved a lot of haters wrong. The 26-year-old running back had a great season in 2022-23. Barkley ran for a career high 1,312 yards from the ground and rumbled in 10 rushing touchdowns. One short of his career best (11). He would also have the most carries in a single season of his career with almost 300. Barkley was also effective in the air as well. He added 57 receptions for 338 yards.

In addition to his successful statistics, Barkley was considered around the league as one of the top candidates of the Comeback Player of the Year award. This was Barkley’s first season since his rookie year in 2018 to not miss a game due to injury.

Barkley’s non-exclusive tag will probably turn into either a trade or a long-term extension, so keep an eye out for more news on it.
