Baltimore Ravens place non-exclusive franchise tag on Lamar Jackson

After all the talk on what big contract Lamar Jackson will get, it has finally made some movements. The Baltimore Ravens have finally placed the non-exclusive franchise tag onto their star QB. Jackson will earn $32.4 million on the non-exclusive tag compared to $45 with the exclusive tag. Via Pro Football Rumors.

Many organizations around the league have been waiting to hear this news from Baltimore these last few weeks. It has finally happened. They have tagged Lamar Jackson. The Ravens have decided to use the cheaper option for their franchise QB for this go around.

With the non-exclusive tag, other teams will be able to send out an offer sheet for the former MVP QB. This wouldn’t be possible if the Ravens used the exclusive tag for Jackson. Baltimore would then be able to match any offer sheet any other team throws at Jackson. If they don’t decide to match the offer sheet from another team, they will give Baltimore two first-round picks in exchange for Jackson.

Baltimore Ravens Vice President and General Manager Eric Costa recently released a statement on Lamar’s contract situation. “Having not yet reached a long-term deal with Lamar Jackson, we will use this franchise tag. There have been many instances across the league and in Baltimore when a player has been designated with the franchise tag and signed a long-term deal that same year. We will continue to negotiate in good faith with Lamar, and we are hopeful that we can strike a long-term deal that is fair to both Lamar and the Ravens. Our ultimate goal is to build a championship team with Lamar Jackson leading the way for many years to come,” said Costa. Via Baltimore Ravens Twitter.

Jackson has been crystal balled to multiple teams across the league. The Atlanta Falcons have been a common name, but are now deciding not to go after the MVP QB, according to Dianna Russini. The Washington Commanders and New York Jets have also piqued their interest in Lamar as well.

In the upcoming NFL draft, we will probably see some major trades happen with the potential of Jackson on the way out of Baltimore.
