Derek Carr’s Fantasy Outlook with the New Orleans Saints

Derek Carr was acquired by the Saints after a four-year deal was reached between the two parties. This comes after the quarterback was in hot water last year with the Raiders, in large part because the team did not meet expectations. Now that he has been picked up by the Saints, does Carr’s fantasy outlook change? Let’s talk about it.

First off, let’s get some general stats. Carr played in 15 games this year, finishing off with 3,522 yards and a touchdown-interception ratio of 24:14. He only rushed for 102 yards but that is not something Carr is known for. In the end, he had 233.08 fantasy points and ended the year as the QB17, according to Sleeper.

Now, that was on the Raiders. An offense stacked with Davante Adams, Darren Waller and Josh Jacobs. But what about what he can do fantasy wise with the New Orleans Saints?

The Saints have a very good offensive roster with plenty of weapons. In the wide receiver corps, they have star Michael Thomas and impressive second-year wideout Chris Olave. To top it off, they have one of the best receiving backs in the league, Alvin Kamara.

In all honesty that star power appears to be pretty even, but it leans slightly more towards the Saints if anything. However, that is if they can remain healthy and on the field. Both Thomas and Kamara have had issues, injury or behavior related, that have the potential to keep them off the field. This would be tragic to Carr’s fantasy outlook due to the lack of weapons at his disposal.

Diving deeper into those issues, Thomas has only played in 10 games the past three seasons. Not only that, but Kamara has also had behavioral issues off the field, one being here recently where he got charges related to battery. This has the potential for a possible suspension in the upcoming season, stinting that offense.

That being said, it all comes down to Carr and how well he can perform. He had one of his worst seasons in total yards and interceptions last year, can that really be solved by going to a new team that actually wants you?

I don’t believe so. In fact, with everything being said, I doubt Carr is going to move his fantasy value at all this upcoming season. Both situations have similarities and could lead to Carr having another average QB15 or 16 season.

I wouldn’t get my hopes up trying to trade for Derek Carr or draft him in the early rounds. His value is pretty much the same. However, the one person who I believe is going to have the biggest change is wide receiver Chris Olave. His value, out of every person in this situation, should be the one monitored the most as it should be the one with the most differential.
